St. Anthony of Padua was a Portuguese Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order, and is one of the Catholic Church's most popular saints. He is the patron saint of lost and stolen articles and is noted by his contemporaries for his forceful preaching, expert knowledge of scripture and undying love and devotion to the poor and sick. He was the second-most-quickly canonized saint, within a year of his death at age 36. He's typically portrayed holding the child Jesus - or a lily, or a book, or all three - in his arms.
